This weekend some of the best college players in Rhode Island will face off in the "College All-Star Match" at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI. Preparation for this match began two weeks ago when rugby teams from Salve Regina University, Providence College, Roger Williams University and The University of Rhode Island competed in a knock out tournament known as the "Rhody Cup" Following a nail-biting finale last week, which saw Salve Regina crowned champions, with a last minute try, representatives from both Newport Men’s and Providence Men’s rugby clubs met to select the most outstanding players from the tournament. Players were selected using a simple draft with Providence and Newport alternating selections and picking from any of the four competing teams. The two new teams created have been dubbed “Providence College All-Stars” & “Newport College All-Stars” and have spent the week training with their respective clubs.
As a brand new exhibition game, this match is designed to provide collegiate players a chance to showcase their talents to a wider audience. This exhibition also aims to help build connections between the adult and college rugby clubs of Rhode Island.
